JOHANN NEPOMUK HUMMEL (1778-1837)
Johann Nepomuk Hummel was born in Preßburg in 1778. He received his first piano lessons from his father Johannes Hummel, but he was more influenced by the lessons he had with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart for two years in the late 1780 years. During these days (1787) he had his first public performance as a pianist in Dresden. One year later he started his first concert tour. His publicity and his ability as a pianist grew continuously. On the recommendation of Joseph Haydn, whose pupil at the organ he has been meanwhile, he became leader of the Esterházy chapel in Eisenstadt in 1804. After having been Hofkapellmeister at Stuttgart 1816, he was appointed Großherzoglicher Kapellmeister in Weimar in February 1819. Due to his three-month concert tours, which he undertook annually, advertised him from Paris to Moscow. Most of his more than 100 compositions, however, had sunk in oblivion. Hummels piano school from 1828 was among the most famous pedagogic piano writs of his time.
„[...] in the trio in A major by Johann Nepomuk Hummel, there was a beautiful, expressive duet between flute and cello. Furthermore, every instrument had quite impressing solo parts, and the whole piece in its harmonic romanticism is worth a discovery.“ Bonner Rundschau
